Wired: straightforward setup

Wired headsets avoid battery charging and receiver pairing, but connector type and platform support still matter. Confirm whether the product uses a 3.5 mm plug, USB-A or USB-C, how microphone and audio channels are routed, and whether an adapter is required for the target console, PC or mobile device.

2.4 GHz wireless: dedicated receiver and charging

A USB receiver can provide a simple wireless setup for compatible hosts. Buyers should ask which systems are supported, whether the receiver is included, how the headset charges, and what measured runtime applies under defined volume and lighting conditions. Do not assume a USB receiver works with every console or phone.

Bluetooth: broad utility, with mode caveats

Bluetooth can suit mobile and everyday listening. Supported codecs, microphone behavior and latency vary by device and profile. For gaming, test the exact headset and host together and explain any mode limitations clearly on the package and product page.

Comfort and voice quality are product features

Request the headset weight, ear-cup dimensions, clamping-force or fit feedback where available, microphone type and mute controls. A sample listening test and voice recording are more useful than vague claims such as “studio quality.”

Questions to put in a headset brief

As a manufacturer example, HyperX lists both 2.4 GHz and Bluetooth modes on its Cloud III S Wireless product page. Those features are specific to that product; compare headset modes using the manufacturer’s documentation for the exact SKU.
